    Water and wastewater lesson plans and resources

    Lesson plans for exploring water and wastewater

    Most of these lesson plans and resources can be completed within a class period.

    All lesson plans include downloadable PowerPoint slides, student worksheets, videos and optional extension activities. These lesson plans can be easily used for in-class or online learning.

    Kindergarten

    In All About Water, students will be introduced to the basic concepts that all living things need water to survive. Students will learn about the connection between human needs and water, and will commit to a classroom promise to save water. This lesson includes videos and water saving activities that the whole class can participate in.

    Grade 1

    In Exploring Water, students will learn about water and wastewater treatment, water efficiency and the importance of drinking tap water. Students will commit to a classroom promise to save water. This lesson provides opportunities for students to explore how they use water and includes water saving activities and videos that the whole class can participate in.

    Grade 2

    In The Cycle of Water, students will learn about water and wastewater, the water cycle, water efficiency, and the importance of drinking tap water. Students will commit and promise to save water at home and at school. Students will get the chance to explore how they use water by engaging with animations that describe water and wastewater treatment.

    Grade 3

    In Water in the Community, students will learn about water and wastewater treatment, water efficiency, and the ways they use water in their daily lives. In this lesson, students will investigate how much water is used when flushing the toilet each day, and how water plays a vital role in the community.

    Grade 4

    In Wastewater Detectives, students will learn about water and wastewater treatment, water efficiency, and investigate what items can and cannot be flushed down or poured down the drains.

    Grade 5

    In Water Inspectors, students will learn about water and wastewater treatment, and water conservation. In this lesson, students will explore and track how much water is used at their school or at their home by completing a water audit.

    Grade 6

    In How Much Do We Really Use? students will learn how our drinking water and wastewater are treated in the Region of Peel. They will also learn about physical and virtual water, and how much water a person uses on an average day by calculating their own water footprint.

    Grade 7

    In Water Debaters, students will learn how our drinking water and wastewater are treated in the Region of Peel. Students will also learn about their own water footprint and will have the opportunity to participate in a classroom debate that will discuss important water issues, such as tap water compared to bottled water.

    Grade 8

    In All About Treatment, students will learn all about water and wastewater treatment in the Region of Peel. Students will have the opportunity to conduct a water audit at home and find out how much water their family uses in a week and learn about the importance of water conservation.
