    Project 24-1370 A

    Watermain replacement and improvement

Streets affected: Heather Street, Terry Street, Kentbridge Court and Vaughan Drive

    Construction work in your area

Peel Region will be replacing the watermain(s) along Heather Street, Terry Street, Kentbridge Court and Vaughan Drive. This map shows each individual street and the area of the proposed watermain.

Watermains are underground pipes that bring tap water from our water treatment facility to your neighbourhood. As pipes age, we need to replace them to provide you with high-quality water.

    Construction schedule

This work will be completed one street at a time, starting on Heather Street and Terry Street the week of August 18, 2025. Once the underground work is completed on each street, we’ll begin repairing impacted driveways, boulevards, sod (grass), roads, curbs, and sidewalks. We expect construction and repair work on these streets to be finished by the end of 2025. These dates may change due to weather and other unexpected events. All work is warranted for 2 years from the completion date.

    What to expect during construction

Refer to our short video to learn what to expect before, during, and after watermain construction. The video also answers common questions about:

    • Why your water may be temporarily shut off.
    • How traffic, parking, and waste collection may be affected.
    • How driveways, roads, and sod (grass) are repaired.

    Contractor working hours

The work will be completed by Ground Breakers Contracting and designed by Environmental Infrastructure Solutions Inc., both under contract to Peel Region. Working hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. These hours are consistent with local municipal bylaws and help shorten the amount of time construction is in your neighbourhood.

    Traffic and parking

We may need to temporarily close roads or reduce traffic to a single lane. If this is needed, we will place signs giving directions. On-street parking will be reduced when we are working on your street.

    Interrupting your water supply

    For residents

    • If we need to shut off your water for several hours, our goal is to let you know 48 hours (2 days) in advance. Sometimes, we must reduce this notice to 24 hours.
    • If we need to shut off your water for a short time (less than one hour), we’ll knock on your door.
    • If we need to shut off your water due to an emergency, we’ll knock on your door and do everything we can to fix the problem quickly.

    For businesses

    • If your business needs a continuous water supply and you have not already completed a water needs survey, please let us know when and how your business uses water.
    • If we need to shut off your water due to an emergency, we’ll knock on your door and do everything we can to fix the problem quickly.

    Waste collection

If you receive Peel waste collection, your garbage, recycling, and organics will be picked up on your regularly scheduled day. It’s the contractor’s responsibility to move these bins from the end of your driveway to a location where waste collection vehicles can pick them up. Please make sure your house number is marked on each bin, so they are returned to the right address.

    Vibrations, noise, and dust

You could feel slight vibrations and experience some minor noise and dust from construction work.

    Construction safety

Construction zones require extra caution to keep everyone safe. Be aware of your surroundings when driving, walking, or biking near the construction area. Watch for construction crews and other road users, slow down, and consider other routes. Learn how to stay safe in construction zones.

    Areas impacted

Installing watermains usually requires digging a trench within the municipal right-of-way. The municipal right-of-way includes the street and the municipal-owned land between the street and the water service box, a small, round, metal valve located outside on the property line between your home or business and the road. This trench might cause temporary damage to roads, curbs, sidewalks, boulevards, lawns, and the bottom of driveways.

To maintain your water supply, we will also replace your water service box and the section of your water service pipe from the watermain to your water service box. The water service pipe carries water from the watermain to your home or business. This requires digging up your water service box in the lawn or driveway and impacting an area of at least two square meters.

We recommend that you delay driveway paving or major landscaping projects until this work is completed. Any damage caused by our construction will be repaired.

    In-ground sprinkler systems

Your front lawn may be affected, so we strongly recommend moving any sprinkler lines in the municipal right-of-way or next to the sidewalk. If you cannot move these sprinkler lines, send us your irrigation map or flag each sprinkler head within one meter of the sidewalk, curb, or driveway.

    Tree trimming

Branches on public and private property will be pruned beforehand if they interfere with construction. The contractor will contact you before pruning any private property trees. If you do not allow the contractor on your property, the branches will be cut vertically at the property line.

    Driveway access

We’ll knock on your door if we have to block your driveway for a short time. If a trench blocks your driveway access, the contractor will provide metal road plates. We will work to ensure businesses can be accessed. Contact us if you have any access needs.

    Repairing impacted areas

Once the new watermain is buried and new water service pipes are connected to all properties, we’ll repair the road, curb, sidewalk, driveways, and lawns.

Repairs may be delayed due to seasonal weather conditions. For example:

    • Paving cannot take place when the ground is saturated with water, or the temperature is below 3°C.
    • Asphalt is not available in large volumes during the winter and usually becomes available in mid-May.

Most sod (grass) farms have sod available beginning in late May. We replace sod until the middle of November, weather permitting, to let the roots grow. If we do not replace it by the middle of November, we’ll replace it the following spring.

    Repairing grassy areas

The contractor will replace any damaged sod on the boulevard or your front lawn and will take care of it for 30 days. You can help the sod stay healthy by watering it. A longer watering works better than watering more frequently for a shorter time. Early morning watering allows more water to soak in.

    Repairing driveways

    Asphalt driveways

    • If we need to cut a section of your driveway, it will be repaired by paving a strip over the impacted area, resulting in minimal seams. Peel cannot replace your entire driveway. If you would like to have the rest of your driveway paved, contact the contractor, Ground Breakers Contracting, at (416) 559-2313. The contractor will then share contact information for the company hired to do the paving repairs. If you decide to have your entire driveway repaved, this extra paving work is your responsibility and outside Peel Region's jurisdiction.

    Interlock or concrete driveways

    • If we damage a portion of your driveway, our contractor will repair the damaged portion.

    Private-side water service replacement

We’re replacing the section of the water service pipe that leads from the watermain to your water service box, a small, round, metal valve near the property line. The privately owned section of the water service pipe between the service box and your home/business is likely the same age and condition. Consider replacing it to ensure a constant supply of high-quality drinking water. Replacing a private-side water service pipe is the property owner’s responsibility. Peel Region cannot do this work for you. Visit Replacing your private-side water pipe for more information.

    Optional protection plans

Homeowners may not know they are responsible for maintaining the water and wastewater pipes up to the property line. If a pipe breaks, it can cause unexpected and costly repairs. Peel has partnered with Service Line Warranties of Canada to offer homeowners optional, affordable protection plans. Visit Service Line Warranties of Canada for more information.
