    Eligibility

Peel Region follows the Ontario Traffic Manual guidelines. We use these guidelines to determine if a new traffic signal is necessary.

    We do this by reviewing:

    • Vehicles passing through the intersection.
    • Pedestrians crossing the intersection.
    • The delay caused to side street motorists and pedestrians crossing the intersection.
    • Accidents at the intersection.

    What you need

To request a new traffic signal, you’ll need to provide the location of the intersection (for example, “Mavis Road and Derry Road West”).

    How to request

To request a new traffic or pedestrian signal at a Peel intersection, email us your request with your name and contact number or call us at 905 791-7800 ext. 7856.

Providing us with any additional information regarding the reason for your request may be helpful.

    Who to contact

If you have a question or need more details about this service, email us or call 905-791-7800 ext. 7856.

    Signal timing

A signal's timing depends on the traffic volume on the road at a given time. Signal timing gives all motor vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians fair time to cross the road.

    • To request more green signal time at an intersection in Brampton and Mississauga, call 311.
    • To request more green signal time at a Caledon intersection, call 905-791-7800 ext. 7851 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday.

    Longer green signals

You may notice that green signal times are longer on main streets or Regional roads (for example, Mississauga Road or Hurontario Street).

The longer green signal times on these roads and intersections help the higher volume of traffic to move more efficiently.

    • To report a faulty traffic signal at an intersection in Brampton and Mississauga, call 311.
    • To report a faulty traffic signal at a Caledon intersection, call 905-791-7800 ext. 7851 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday.

For additional information about reporting a pedestrian signal, call Peel Public Works at 905-791-7800 ext. 7851 or 905-866-4142.

    Vehicle detection

Peel Region uses overhead detectors or sensors to detect vehicles on the road.

Response of traffic signals to emergency vehicles

When emergency vehicles, such as ambulances or fire trucks approach an intersection, the traffic controller activates a green signal to allow the vehicle to pass through the intersection safely and quickly.

Once the emergency vehicle clears the intersection, the traffic signal returns to its normal operation.

This system is in place for all traffic signals in the Region of Peel.
