Project 18-2300 C2
Streets affected: Lornewood Creek.
Project updates
Peel Region has been working in your neighbourhood to replace the aging sanitary sewer along Lornewood Creek (just north of Fair Birch Drive) by installing a new sewer along Birchview Drive and Fair Birch Drive. Once the new sewers are completed in 2023, we will safely retire the sewer running along Lornewood Creek.
To retire the sewer, we will need to access the area through the existing easement. The easement is where the Region of Peel has obtained legal permission to enter your land for the purpose of maintaining Regional infrastructure. The attached map shows the location of the easement and this upcoming work.
Environmental considerations
In recognition of the important ecological and community benefits associated with the Lornewood Creek Corridor, all efforts are being made to minimize disturbance and restore the area as close to existing conditions as possible. The work will happen in the winter of 2024 so that the ground is firm and there is less disturbance of vegetation and wildlife. Access to the work areas at each maintenance hole (commonly referred to as manholes) will be allowed only along a defined route. Work will be overseen by a certified arborist to minimize disruption to trees. The sewer retirement and restoration plan has been developed in close consultation with the Credit Valley Conservation Authority to ensure that all potential environmental concerns are addressed.
Schedule of work
We anticipate this work to begin as early as January 2024 and be completed by the end of March 2024. If this schedule changes, we will update you.
Safely retiring the sewer
To retire the sanitary sewer, we will pump concrete into selected maintenance holes (commonly referred to as manholes). Once the concrete has set within the sewer, the top portion of the maintenance holes will be removed, and the surface will be restored to natural conditions. This process will prevent long-term weakening of the sewer that could otherwise lead to future environmental or safety concerns.
Within the easement lands, the contractor will complete this work using hand tools and very light mechanical equipment similar in size to a riding lawnmower.
Fair Birch Drive will be used when bringing materials in and out of the easement.
What to expect
- Peel Region has a permanent easement over the entire length of the existing sewer. Work will only occur within the easement limits. We will mainly access the easement from Fair Birch Drive.
- Residents of properties nearby but not on the access route should anticipate moderate noise during working hours from light construction traffic.
- Residents of properties along the access route within the easement, which do not have a maintenance hole, will also be impacted by the movement of personnel, handheld equipment, and light equipment. While impacts from this activity are expected to be minimal, any impacted areas will be restored to existing conditions based on the requirements of the Credit Valley Conservation Authority.
- Residents of properties which have a maintenance hole within the easement can expect the following to occur:
- Temporary fencing will be installed around the maintenance hole to surround the work area and prevent any debris from entering the creek.
- The steel maintenance hole lids will be removed and transported off site.
- The concrete maintenance hole chambers will be broken apart to a depth of 1.5 meters below the existing ground in accordance with Ontario Provincial Standards. This is also required by the Conservation Authority, to prevent the maintenance hole chambers from being exposed due to natural meandering of the creek in the distant future.
- After breaking up the maintenance hole chamber, the resulting hole will be filled with earth to stabilize the ground.
- Areas that are disturbed (by the removal of the maintenance hole or for any other reason) will be seeded and covered with a naturally biodegradable fibre blanket so that the seeds remain in place until they can germinate in the spring.
