Low Impact Development (LID) Facilities – Erin Mills Parkway South of Highway 403

    Schedule A+ Class Environmental Assessment

    About the project

The Region of Peel is designing the application of Low Impact Development (LID) systems at two (2) locations along Erin Mills Parkway to improve stormwater quality of road runoff. LID refers to stormwater management systems and practices that mimic natural water balance by enhancing run-off infiltration, filtration, and detention, and provides several ecological, economic, and social benefits. Typical LID utilized along regional road ROW are bioretention, underground infiltration trenches or chambers, and bioswales.

Improving Wastewater and Stormwater Discharges in Lake Ontario Program

The Ontario government has made available this grant to help 18 municipalities, including Peel Region, improve storm and wastewater infrastructure. Eligible projects in the stormwater sector include cleaning out sediment from stormwater management ponds and putting green stormwater infrastructure/ Low Impact Development (LID) in place.

The Region of Peel is designing the application of Low Impact Development (LID) systems at two (2) locations along Erin Mills Parkway to improve stormwater quality of road runoff. Typical LID utilized along regional road ROW are bioretention, underground infiltration trenches or chambers, and bioswales.

The recommendation for LID application in this project is from the Regional Road Storm Servicing Master Plan (RRSSMP) which is recently carried out by Region of Peel with an intention to “provide efficient stormwater servicing to existing and future Regional Road infrastructure”. The Master Plan has identified the project area as one of the key candidate locations to incorporate LID infrastructure. Information regarding the Master Plan can be accessed on its webpage.

    The Process

The planning for this project followed the environmental screening process set out for Schedule A+ activities under the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process. The purpose of the screening process is to identify potential environmental impacts associated with the project and to plan for appropriate mitigation of any impacts. Schedule A+ means the project is pre-approved; however, the public is advised prior to project implementation.

Region of Peel intends to proceed with construction of this project in summer to fall of 2023 and the anticipated completion date is March 2024. Funding for the projects is provided through the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP).
