The Volunteer Community Responder pilot program aims to see if crowdsourcing CPR can save more lives in Peel.
How the program works
When someone calls 911 with signs of cardiac arrest:
- The emergency dispatcher alerts paramedics.
- Peel Regional Paramedic Services uses a mobile phone app. to alert volunteers who are near to the patient. All volunteers know CPR. Some carry an AED (automatic external defibrillator).
- The volunteer helps the patient before paramedics arrive.
When someone in cardiac arrest gets early CPR and defibrillation, their chance of survival can increase by up to 70%.
This pilot program is part of a 5-year study with Sunnybrook Hospital.
