Adopt a Road Program
Adopt a Road is a public service volunteer program to help local litter collection on regional roads.
Volunteers can either:
- Adopt a section of a regional road and pick up litter along that adopted section, or
- Sponsor a section of the roadway through financial payment.
Picking up litter is known as “picking day.” The adopted section of the road is known as the “picking site.”
Volunteering for this program helps protect the environment and keeps Peel Region clean.
When you choose (adopt) an urban or rural section of a Peel regional road, you commit to keeping that section litter-free by picking up litter twice a year: once in the spring (April to May), and once in the fall (September to October).
By adopting or sponsoring a regional road, you’re showing the community your:
- Commitment and care to the environment.
- Concern for wildlife.
- Dedication to improving your community today and tomorrow.
Peel Region will provide sponsorship signs with your name or logo to post along the adopted section of the road.

Eligibility
Volunteers in this program must be 16 years or older to participate.
Volunteers:
- Can be part of a group, organization, or company.
- Must be considered responsible by Peel Region.
- Must demonstrate, in good faith, the desire and ability to meet Adopt a Road Program objectives.
Peel Region will review a company, group, or organization’s name, logo, and text for suitability. An application may be rejected if any of these elements are not deemed appropriate.

- Phone number
- Company name (if applicable)
- Name and section of the roadway you want to adopt
Fees
Payment option
Volunteers who wish to adopt a regional road only, and not take part in picking up litter, can sponsor a section of the roadway through financial payment.
Fees will provide litter collection and lawn mowing services (approximately 2 to 7 times per year).
Adopted regional roads will receive an ‘Adopt a Road' sign for that section of the road with their company name and logo.
Yearly breakdown charges per km:
- Rural: $330.18 per km
- Urban: $1,650.87 per km
We accept payment by:
- Visa or Mastercard.
- Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT), or
- A cheque made payable to “Region of Peel” mailed to The Region of Peel, Accounts Payable, PO Box 625, Brampton, ON L6V 2L6.
How to apply
Complete and submit our online Adopt a Road application form.
Once our team receives your application, we’ll confirm that the section of road you want is available.
Peel Region may refuse a Regional road adoption if granting the adoption request would:
- Jeopardize the program.
- Be counterproductive to the program’s purpose.
- Create a public safety hazard.
- Conflict with government or Peel Region policies.

Rules and expectations
Applicants and volunteers who are accepted and wish to participate in the Adopt a Road program must follow all the rules and expectations of the program.
All Adopt-a-Road volunteers:
- Must sign a waiver before participating.
- Must complete an online training module, review the safety information Peel Region provides, and sign the Volunteer Agreement Form.
- Must keep up with their obligation to their adopted section of the roadway. If obligations aren’t met, the adopted section will be forfeited, and Peel Region will remove the adopt-a-road sign.
- Are not considered officers, employees, or agents of Peel Region.
- Are solely responsible for any injuries, claims, liabilities, suits, or costs resulting from their activities relating to this agreement.
- Must agree to follow Peel Region's guidelines and indemnify Peel Region for harm or loss.
- Will not hold Peel Region responsible for any injuries or damages that they may cause or suffer as a result of participating in the Adopt-a-Road program.
Time commitment
Peel Region Adopt a Road volunteers commit to picking up litter twice a year – once between April and August and once during September or October – on the section of the Regional road that was adopted.
There is a minimum 2-year commitment, but some participants stay in the program for longer.

Before your picking day
All volunteers must complete the online training module and complete and submit their Agreement Form before picking begins.
Before your scheduled picking day, volunteers are expected to pick up a supply kit that includes resources from Peel Region’s Road Operations at our Public Works yard.
Each supply kit will include:
- cones to mark hazards
- garbage bags
- latex gloves
- litter pickers
- safety vests
- signage
Regional employees will contact you to confirm the date and time for you to pick up the supply kit.
Volunteers are responsible for returning the supply kit to either of these designated Public Works yards after their scheduled picking day:
