New provincial recycling program
The province of Ontario is changing who is responsible for recycling. Currently, municipalities collect and process recycling.
Under the new plan, producers – who supply recyclable materials to the community – will pay for and run recycling programs. These changes make producers fully accountable and financially responsible for the disposal of their products and packaging.
What does this mean for Peel Region?
Peel Region is transitioning to this new producer-led recycling program as of October 2024, but we are taking a phased approach to complete the transfer of recycling responsibility to producers.
After October 2024, Peel Region’s waste services to our community will remain the same. We will continue to:
- Collect your recycling, organics, garbage, and yard waste.
- Operate its 6 Community Recycling Centres.
- Offer programs that support diverting waste from landfills.
- Collect recycling from fire, police and paramedic stations, community centres and arenas, places of worship, municipal buildings, and some small businesses already included in Peel Region’s collection program.
By December 2025, all municipalities in Ontario will switch to the new producer-led recycling program.
The benefits of this change include:
- More items eligible for recycling.
- Better recycling in public spaces like parks and malls.
- Recycling rules will be the same in all Ontario municipalities.
- Packaging will improve to become easier to recycle.
While there will be a few operational changes at our facility, this will not impact our service to the community. By Fall 2025, residents will be made aware of any service changes that may occur with your recycling collection and other recycling-related services.
