New provincial recycling program
Currently, municipalities collect and process recycling.
Under a new plan, producers of products and packaging will pay for and run recycling programs.
This change will make producers fully accountable and financially responsible for the disposal of their products and packaging.
What does this mean for Peel Region?
Peel Region is transitioning to this new producer-led recycling program through a phased approach.
Peel Region’s waste services will stay the same until December 2025.
By January 1, 2026, all municipalities in Ontario, including Peel Region, will switch to the new producer-led recycling program. Circular Materials will take over the operation of Peel’s curbside recycling program on behalf of producers.
In the meantime, we’ll keep:
- Collecting your recycling, organics, garbage, and yard waste.
- Operating our 6 Community Recycling Centres.
- Offering programs that support diverting waste from landfills.
- Collecting recycling from fire, police and paramedic stations, community centres and arenas, places of worship, municipal buildings, and some small businesses already included in Peel Region’s collection program.
The benefits of this change include:
- More items being eligible for recycling.
- Improved recycling in public spaces like parks and malls.
- The same recycling rules for all Ontario municipalities.
- Improved packaging that's easier to recycle.
While there will be a few operational changes at our facility, this will not impact our service to the community.
By Fall 2025, residents will be made aware of any service changes that might happen with recycling collection and other recycling-related services.
