Garbage

Garbage is collected every other week. Check your personalized waste calendar for your collection schedule.

This information applies to you if your address receives cart-based collection.

Using your garbage cart

Exchanging, repairing or replacing your garbage cart

You can change your garbage cart for a smaller or larger-sized cart. An exchange fee of $25 will apply. Get more details about changing a cart size.

Garbage carts that are damaged, broken, lost or stolen will be repaired or replaced, free of charge, except in the case of negligence. Report a cart problem.

These items are a sample of acceptable garbage items:

  • Aluminum foil
  • Bread and milk tags
  • Chewing gum
  • Pet waste
  • Absorbent pads from meat trays
  • Diapers
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Coffee cups
  • Plastic cereal and cracker box liners
  • Shrink wrap

Collectors will pick up your garbage every other week on your scheduled collection day. Only one cart will be collected. Excess garbage must be put in a plastic garbage bag, can or container and must be tagged with a garbage tag.

Alternatively, it can be taken to your local Community Recycling Centre (CRC). A disposal fee will apply.

Plastic garbage bags used for excess garbage must be strong enough to securely hold their contents.

Each bag must be:

  • No larger than 66 cm (26 in) wide and 90 cm (35 in) high.
  • No smaller than 30 cm (12 in) wide and 30 cm (12 in) high.
  • No more than 20 kg (44 lbs).
  • Closed or tied at the top.

Garbage cans or containers used for excess garbage must be rigid with removable lids and rigid handles that are attached or moulded to the container.

Each can or container must be:

  • No larger than 95 cm (38 in) high and 60 cm (24 in) wide.
  • No larger than 125 L (27.5 imperial gallons).
  • No more than 20 kg (44 lbs).

Garbage tags

Excess garbage at the curb must be tagged.

Excess bags without tags will NOT be collected. Tags must be tied at the top of the bag.

Bag tag cost

Effective January 2020, garbage tags cost $3 each. Minimum purchase of 5.

No expiry date

Garbage tags do not expire.

Any tags purchased before January 2020 are still valid. You do not have to buy new tags.

Due to the COVID-19 virus, in-person garbage bag tag sales are suspended at all municipal facilities in Peel.
