Winter road safety
Our Road Operations crews are ready to respond around the clock to clear roads of snow and ice and ensure safe driving conditions for all road users.
Clearing and maintaining Regional roads
Peel Region is responsible for clearing and maintaining more than 1,600 kilometres of Regional roads, most of which carry high volumes of traffic and generally have higher driving speeds than local roads.
Our municipalities – Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga – clear local and residential streets and sidewalks. Together, we coordinate winter road clearing activities to ensure timely and effective services along all roads in Peel.
The community relies on our crews to face the elements any time of day or night and provide road and sidewalk clearing.
Starting in the fall when temperatures begin to drop, our anti-icing trucks start applying 'brine', a water and salt mix, on dry roads and bridges to help prevent ice from forming overnight. Using brine reduces the use of solid rock salt, which benefits the environment and excessive salt use.
- Follow parking restrictions that may be in place during the winter and don’t park on the sidewalk.

How to help our operations run smoothly
Follow these guidelines to help winter operations run smoothly:
- Reduce your speed to react to winter road conditions.
- Keep a distance from and give our winter maintenance vehicles space to work.
- Never pass a working vehicle as visibility around these vehicles can be poor.
- Be cautious driving on bridges as black ice can form quickly.
- Be informed of current winter conditions and forecast and plan for increased travel times.
- Follow parking restrictions that may be in place during the winter and do not park on the sidewalk.
- Don’t park on the street until it has been salted or plowed. Parked cars block access for snow clearing equipment and emergency vehicles.
