    Damage or injury claim

If you feel Peel Region can be held legally liable for property damage or a personal injury that you've experienced, you can make a claim for financial compensation.

This page provides information only about submitting a compensation claim for property damage or a personal injury.

Claim for compensation versus a complaint

If you have a concern or complaint about a Peel Region service that does not involve a request for compensation:

    1. Complete our online customer feedback form as the first step to having the complaint or concern reviewed and addressed; and
    2. Then, if you remain dissatisfied, you can pursue the review of your concern or complaint through Peel Region’s formal complaint process.

    Eligibility

Anyone who has experienced property damage or injury and feels that Peel could be held legally liable as the alleged result of negligent design, construction, operation, or maintenance of Peel Region’s assets or as the result of Peel Region’s delivery of its services may make a claim.

Submitting a claim does not guarantee compensation will be provided.

Each claim is reviewed by Peel Region’s Loss Management section and the operational section whose assets or services are alleged to be the cause of the property damage or injury.

This initial form of claim is an informal claim and a potential precursor to a more formal claim or lawsuit. It could take weeks, months, or even years to resolve if Peel Region and/or its insurer disagrees with the allegation that Peel Region is legally responsible for the alleged property damage or injury, or the amount of compensation being requested.

Peel Region’s Loss Management section will work with you to gather and review the relevant facts and documents for your claim and to assess and resolve your claim in Peel Region’s and/or its insurer’s discretion.

    What you need

You’ll need to provide all relevant information regarding your claim, including but not limited to:

    • Your name and contact details.
    • The date, location, and time of the incident.

You’ll need to provide information that supports your claim, such as:

    • Documents proving that Peel Region is responsible for damage or injury.
    • Documents showing the amount of damage being claimed (for compensation).

    Fees

There is no cost to submit an information claim for compensation for Peel Region to process.

How to make a damage or injury claim

To make a damage or injury claim, email Loss Management or call 905-791-7800 ext. 4269.

    Who to contact

Peel Region is not your insurance company: Peel Region can only be made to provide financial compensation in instances where it can be established that Peel Region is legally liable for the property damage or injury being claimed.

As there is no guarantee that compensation will be provided or that it could take weeks, months or even longer to finalize your claim, especially of there are differing views of responsibility, you should consider taking steps to mitigate your property damage or injury and reporting the matter to your own insurance company.

To start a claim review by Peel Region, email Loss Management or call 905-791-7800 ext. 4269.

    Common reasons for claims

    • Damage arising from your use of a Peel Region-maintained road. Access the list of Peel Regional roads or view on a map.
    • Collision involving a Region automobile/vehicle. In Ontario, vehicle owners process claims for damage to their vehicles with their own automobile insurer
    • Sanitary/wastewater sewer back-up
    • Watermain or service break or leak
    • Injury involving a Peel Region asset or operation
