New supplementary water supply source

Palgrave – Caledon East drinking water system

Revised project name and schedule

Background

The Region of Peel owns and operates the Palgrave – Caledon East Drinking Water System a groundwater – based system, supplying drinking water to the communities of Caledon East, Palgrave, Palgrave Estates, Mono Road, Albion, Centreville, and Cedar Mills, in the Town of Caledon. The system is currently supplied by six (6) municipal groundwater sources located in Palgrave and Caledon East.

Class EA Study Process

A Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) study is being initiated to plan for additional water supply capacity to the existing Palgrave – Caledon East Drinking Water System. An additional water source will increase the supply capacity to the existing system to meet the long-term water needs of the serviced area.

In anticipation of this Class EA study, the Region drilled in 2020, a new groundwater well on the north side Castlederg Road, just east of Airport Road. The new well, referred to as the Caledon East Well #6 will be considered as a supplementary source of supply alternative for the system, in the Class EA study.

A previous Notice of Commencement for the Connection of New Caledon East Well #6 was issued to advise the starting of the project as a Schedule B project. The Class EA study is now being conducted as a Schedule ‘C’ project according to the requirements of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment document (October 2000, as amended in 2007, 2011 & 2015).

The purpose of the study is to evaluate and identify the preferred infrastructure improvements to the water supply system in the Palgrave – Caledon East Drinking Water System. The study will include an evaluation of alternative solutions and alternative design concepts, an assessment of potential impacts associated with the required works/infrastructure and development of measures to mitigate identified impacts.

We will consult the public, review agencies, Indigenous Communities and First Nations Groups throughout the Class EA study. Two (2) Public Information Centres (PICs) will be held in association with this study. Notices for the PICs will be published in local newspapers and distribute to all individuals who express an interest in this project.
