2025 Water and Wastewater Master Plan for the lake-based systems
Peel Region is growing. Given the significant population growth that is anticipated and the corresponding demand on water and wastewater services, it is critical to continue developing Peel’s long term infrastructure plan for its lake-based water and wastewater systems. Peel will be updating its 2020 Water and Wastewater Master Plan to support existing servicing needs and future growth to 2051 while also preparing for accelerated growth in Mississauga, Brampton, and parts of Caledon.
The Master Plan is anticipated to be completed in 2026 and will:
- Align with the latest Regional Official Plan population and employment forecasts to 2051.
- Consider the accelerated growth implications of the province's Bill 23.
- Include collaboration with local municipalities to identify priority growth areas such as major transit station areas.
- Assess potential growth beyond the 2051 planning horizon for long-term infrastructure planning purposes.
Figure 1 – A diagram of a blue arrow going from left to right showing the project timelines for the 2025 water and wastewater master plan update.
Within the arrow are project milestones. These include the project initiation in June 2023, the notice of commencement in November 2023, the received draft growth numbers in fall and winter of 2024, water/wastewater strategies public information centre #1 in the fall of 2025, the Notice of Masterplan report and the start of the 45-day review period in fall/winter 2025, and the end of the 45-day review period in the winter of 2025/2026.
Also shown on the diagram is the 10–12-month duration timeline between the received draft growth numbers and the water/wastewater strategies public information centre #1 and the overall timeline for the project of 2 and a half years. Also noted is “We are here” with an orange arrow pointing to received draft growth numbers fall and winter 2024 and an asterisk statement, “please note that these timelines are subject to change.”
Process
The study will follow the Municipal Engineers Association Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Master Planning, Approach 1 process.
The study will:
- Satisfy Phases 1 and 2 of the Class EA process, including developing and evaluating alternative servicing strategies, routes, and sites.
- Consider public and stakeholder input throughout the process.
- Conclude with a Master Servicing Plan Report that will be filed for public review.
Your input is important
One Public Information Centre (PICs) will be held to present the findings of the Master Plan Class EA and to provide an opportunity to give feedback to the project team. PIC 1 is anticipated for late spring 2025. More information will be provided by Peel closer to the date.
