Regional Council approves transfer of waste collection services to local municipalities

Body

Brampton, ON - (Mar. 21, 2025) - Peel Regional Council has approved a motion to transfer waste collection services from Peel Region to the City of Mississauga, City of Brampton, and Town of Caledon, effective January 1, 2026. This decision is in accordance with the Municipal Act, 2001.

Under the new arrangement, the three municipalities will assume responsibility for curbside and multi-residential waste collection. Peel Region will retain responsibility for Community Recycling Centres (CRCs), as well as transfer, processing, and disposal services.

A transition committee, including representatives from Peel, Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon, will guide the transfer process and oversee operational and service delivery planning, employee transition, financial planning and cost-sharing considerations. This includes the transfer of responsibility for the current waste collection contracts, which don’t expire until September 30, 2027.

There are no immediate changes to the public at this time and further communication will be issued closer to the time of transition.

Peel Region has been delivering efficient and cost-effective waste management services for over 50 years. In accordance with Regional Council’s decision, we will collaborate with our municipal partners to ensure a seamless transfer of waste collection at the right time, without service disruption to the community.
