Region of Peel declares climate change emergency

Oct. 24, 2019 (Brampton, ON) – Peel Regional Council has declared a climate emergency. A climate emergency declaration is a statement that Regional Council sees the changing climate as a threat to how the Region operates and how its residents live. It is also a commitment to take actions that will help the Region adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.

Commitments in the declaration include:

• Reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the 2030 target identified in the Climate Change Master Plan in support of further reductions by 2050 as laid out by previous Council commitments
• Achieve Council’s commitment to address climate change and align with the common call for urgent action by municipalities locally, nationally and internationally
• Share the Climate Change Master Plan with Environment Canada and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and the Peel Climate Change Partnership
• Staff be directed to advocate to all levels of government for opportunities that support strategic alignment and cost sharing of the Climate Change Master plan’s actions

The climate emergency was declared as Regional council approved the Climate Change Master Plan. The motion was brought forward by Councillor Santos and seconded by Councillor Innis. The motion passed unanimously. By declaring a climate emergency, the Region joins a global movement of over 1100 jurisdictions in 22 countries who have already made declarations.
