Peel’s 2025 Budget discussions continue; presentation highlights from Dec. 5

Brampton, ON - (Dec. 9, 2024) – Last week at Regional Council, the proposed 2025 Operating and Capital Budgets for Water and Wastewater, Public Health, Seniors Services, Community Investment, Waste Management, Transportation, and Heritage, Arts and Culture were presented. Two of the Regionally Financed External Organizations, Credit Valley Conservation, and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority also presented.

Service Budget Highlights

Water and Wastewater

  • Resource planning and modeling to meet future demands and growth
  • Aligning the capital program with Peel’s new official plan and municipal growth targets
  • A focus on innovation, new technology, best practices and partnerships
  • Continued maturity in long term Asset Management Plans
  • Developing a Maintenance Master Plan
  • Employing a climate change lens on new capital and rehabilitation projects
  • Various water main replacements and construction, pumping station rehabilitation and expansions, and expansion of Water Resource Recovery Facilities
  • 2025-2028 Water and Wastewater Business Plan and 2025 Budget

Public Health

  • Stabilizing public health programs with ongoing efforts to better understand community needs
  • Increasing capacity for communicable disease programming to prevent transmission in the community
  • Expanding public health inspection capacity to respond to increased number of public complaints and inspection requirements
  • Completing post-pandemic catch-up of school immunization, and record screening and enforcement of the Immunization of School Pupils Act, 1990
  • Supporting the psychological health and safety of the workforce
  • 2025-2028 Public Health Business Plan and 2025 Budget

Seniors Services

  • Stabilizing operations to improve resident, client, caregiver, and staff experience
  • Cultivating a resilient and empowered workforce by promoting employee psychological health, wellbeing, and culture
  • Piloting integrated care and expanding Adult Day Services and Respite Care to support clients and caregivers to age at home
  • Leveraging technology and infrastructure to meet current and future needs
  • 2025-2028 Seniors Services Business Plan and 2025 Budget

Community Investment

  • Driving solutions that can mitigate the impacts of poverty
  • Strengthening investment and capacity due to increased demands on not-for-profits, including targeted investment in food security
  • Coordinating a systems response to increased immigration and refugees
  • Advocating for resources and greater coordination for Anti-Human Sex Trafficking supports
  • Continuing to convene and develop strategies that leverage the broader community sector

Waste Management

Transportation

  • Updating the Transportation Master Plan to account for changes in housing targets, plan for growth to 2051
  • Investing resources to support the Provinces accelerated delivery of higher order transit
  • Building infrastructure to support growth in key corridors such as Mississauga Rd., Mayfield Rd., Dixie Rd., Airport Rd., and Highway 50  
  • Prioritize building and improving active transportation facilities such as sidewalks and multi-use paths
  • Continued implementation and updates to the Accessible Transportation Master Plan and modernized service delivery by TransHelp
  • 2025-2028 Transportation Business Plan and 2025 Budget

Heritage, Arts and Culture

  • Managing provincially significant heritage buildings and associated cultural landscapes through ongoing maintenance, preservation and responsive care
  • Engaging with youth through the PAMA Youth Committee to co-design programming
  • Conducting policy reviews and updates to support legislative compliance and industry best practices for cultural institutions
  • 2025-2028 Heritage, Arts and Culture Business Plan and 2025 Budget

There will be continued discussions on the 2025 Operating and Capital Budget at the December 12, 2024 Regional Council meeting. The Regional Council Budget meeting(s) are open to the public and residents may attend. The meetings will also be live streamed on peelregion.ca.
