Peel Region is preparing the community for the future.
BRAMPTON, ON (February 4, 2025) – Peel Region has begun the Dixie Area Water and Roads Improvement project, a major construction project in Brampton. It’s one of many capital projects being undertaken to build the infrastructure needed to support 1.5 million homes to be built in Ontario over the next 10 years.
These provincial housing targets have significantly increased the demand for water, wastewater, and road infrastructure, at rates almost five times that of Peel’s historical growth. In response, Peel Region Council has approved over $1 billion in capital investments to support these targets, reinforcing our commitment to building the essential water and wastewater infrastructure needed for our future communities.
The Dixie Area Water and Roads Improvement project includes installing watermains, upgrading water reservoirs, replacing noise walls along Dixie Road, road widening and additional lanes to improve commute times.
As part of the current construction activities, watermain tunnel shaft compounds are being built at:
- Dixie Road and Clark Boulevard
- Dixie Road north of Queen Street East
- Dixie Road north of Howden Boulevard
- Dixie Road between Lascelles Boulevard and Williams Parkway
- Dixie Road and Williams Parkway
- Dixie Road between Northampton Street/Mansion Street and North Park Drive
- Williams Parkway at Newcastle Park
These shaft compounds will allow tunnel-boring machines to dig deep holes underground allowing large-diameter watermains to be installed.
Due to their size and locations, the compounds require ongoing lane restrictions that may cause traffic delays. Additionally, as work is coordinated with the City of Brampton there may be periods when lanes are reopened and closed again to enable different types of work during the construction. Lane restrictions will be in place over the next two years.
Up-to-date construction information for the Dixie Area project is available by signing up for e-notices or following @PeelPublicWorks #PeelDixie on X.
This large-scale construction project in Brampton will impact residents and road users but is necessary to meet tomorrow’s housing demands. By building the enabling infrastructure needed as our community grows, Peel continues its commitment to deliver exceptional water and wastewater services now and into the future.
