Peel Region announces Steve Jacques as new Commissioner of Human Services

BRAMPTON, ON (July 10, 2024) – Peel Region announces Steve Jacques as the new Commissioner of Human Services. His first day with Peel will be Monday, August 12, 2024.

Steve joins Peel’s Executive Leadership Team and will oversee a comprehensive portfolio of programs and initiatives aimed at enhancing the well-being of individuals and families within the Peel community. Additionally, he will provide leadership to Peel Housing Corporation, ensuring the provision of safe and affordable housing options for residents.

A senior leader with over 25 years of experience, Steve has a proven track record of achievements in the areas of human services administration with a focus on housing, social assistance and community development. He has gained deep knowledge and experience of the public sector through his work at several municipalities and public sector organizations.

Steve’s most recent role was General Manager, Community Development and Chief – COVID Emergency Operations, at the City of Greater Sudbury, overseeing multiple large-scale projects, including the development of a nationally recognized strategy to address encampments. He has also been the Director, Ontario Works, at the City of Hamilton, providing oversight and strategic guidance for the modernization of Ontario Works service delivery as well as a short time at Peel as Director, Regional Planning and Growth Management.

Steve gained a wealth of community housing experience through his work at the Toronto Community Housing Corporation where, as Director, Revitalization and Renewal Communities, he was responsible for the redevelopment of neighbourhoods such as Regent Park. As Ontario Manager, Community Development and Research, at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, he was responsible for developing, negotiating, delivering, and administering affordable housing programs across Ontario.

Steve holds a Master of Science in Planning degree from the University of Toronto and an Executive Leadership Program Certificate from the IVEY School of Business at Western University. He is a Registered Professional Planner and a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners. Steve sits on several Boards of Directors including Board of Advisors, Homelessness, Ontario Association of Municipalities.
