Organic waste collection at Peel Living
Peel Housing Corporation is responsible for diverting 50% of food waste and organic items from its buildings by 2025.
Peel Living residents will be able to sort and dispose of their organic waste separately from garbage starting spring 2024.
The program will start at some Peel Living locations sooner than others with all buildings anticipated to receive organics collection by end of summer. We’ll share details with you about what to expect and when the program is set to start in your building.
The diversion of food waste and organic items at Peel Living is mandated by the Food and Organic Waste Policy Statement (2018).
About organics
Organic waste generally refers to items that come from plants or animals. When collected and processed separately, these items can be converted into soil for growing fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
If you put organics items in your garbage, they:
- End up in the landfill.
- Release methane gas, which is harmful to everyone.
Small organics bin arriving soon
Your small organics bin makes it easy to sort and dispose of acceptable organic items, including:
- food scraps
- fruits and vegetables
- bones, meat, and fish
- coffee grounds and filters
- paper napkins and paper towels
- loose shredded paper
- cotton balls
- greasy pizza boxes (broken down)
- microwave popcorn bags
- house plants (with soil removed)
You can use any plastic bag as a bin liner or use cardboard, newspaper, shredded paper, paper towels or certified compost bags.
How to use your small organics bin
- Remove all packaging before putting food in the bin.
- Scrape leftover food directly into it.
- Consider putting used cooking oil and grease (cooled down) in a sealable bag or freezing it to avoid mess and spills. Never pour oils and grease down the sink drain.
- Add baking soda to reduce the stinky smells.
- Dispose of the items in your building’s designated green bin regularly
- Clean your bin regularly. It is dishwasher safe and can be cleaned with mild detergent.
