Region of Peel Public Works wins multiple awards
Brampton, ON. (June 5, 2023) - Peel Region recently received two awards from the Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) and two awards from the Water Environment Association of Ontario (WEAO).
Simon Chue, a Specialist in the Solid Waste Management Division, won the 2022 Wally Wells Young Leader Award. Chue works with Peel Region's Community Recycling Centres Bicycle Program, which donates used bicycles to educational, non-profit, and charitable organizations free of charge.
The Region also received an OPWA Public Works Project of the Year Award in the $10 to $50 million project category for the G.E. Booth Water Resource Recovery Facility. The facility is undergoing a modernization and transformation and the award recognizes the significant coordination involved in preparation for the building of a new plant to replace some of the Region's older wastewater treatment infrastructure.
The WEAO also honoured Peel's Public Works staff with a pair of awards. The Lakeview Village District Energy project won the WEAO's Climate Action award, while Mario Menezes won the WEAO’s George W. Burke, Jr. Award, which celebrates active and effective safety programs in municipal and industrial wastewater facilities.
I was delighted to hear that Simon has won the Wally Wells Young Leader Award and Mario has won the George W. Burke, Jr. Award. These are great honours and demonstrates the deep bench of talented people we have at the Region at every career level. I'm also proud of our Water and Wastewater team for their significant achievements at the OPWA and WEAO as we work to deliver the high-quality public services this community has come to expect from Peel Region.
