Peel Public Works employees win national hydrant building competition

Brampton, ON. (June 28, 2023) - Two Peel Region employees won the Woman’s Hydrant Hysteria Competition at the recent American Water Works Association (AWWA) ACE23 conference in Toronto.

Deanna Bowden and Nicole Williams, supported by their coach Patrick Gervais, assembled a hydrant in just under two minutes (1:51) in the finals of the three-day competition. They competed against more than 20 teams from across North America. The national conference has a number of competitions where Water and Wastewater Operators can showcase their skills, such as hydrant assembly, main line tapping and an overall competition including water testing, safety, and maintenance.

Prior to winning in Toronto, both the Peel men's and women's team qualified at the Ontario Water Works Association competition for municipalities across the province. Both teams were first time competitors and only started practicing eight weeks before the conference. The women's team will test their skills in Anaheim California next year to defend their title.

Team members and coaches are part of the Water and Wastewater Operations team responsible for providing safe drinking water and wastewater collection for all Peel residents and businesses.

I would like to congratulate both teams on their achievement, which was made possible because of their dedication, determination, and teamwork. I want to thank everyone for being role models for the Water and Wastewater team and showcasing the essential services we provide in peel region.
