Community spread COVID-19 death at Brampton Civic Hospital
Brampton, ON (April 9, 2020) – Early Thursday, a Brampton man in his 50s who was a long-time Environmental Services Associate at Brampton Civic Hospital, passed away from COVID-19. He had been in intensive care at Brampton Civic. An investigation revealed he likely acquired the virus in the community and not at work.
“Every loss of life to COVID-19 is tragic. On behalf of the Region of Peel, I extend our deepest condolences to his family both at home and at work,” said Dr. Lawrence Loh, Interim Medical Officer of Health for the Region of Peel. “He played an important role in keeping the health care system working and we mourn his loss.”
Risk related to community spread can be reduced by taking strong personal measures to protect ourselves and others from COVID-19. Residents are reminded to stay home and only leave the house once a week for essentials like groceries, medicines and medical appointments. Daily exercise should be done alone, with one family member, or to exercise a pet.
Residents over the age of 70 should stay home and go out for solo exercise or essential needs. Where possible, get help from family and social supports as much as possible for essential needs. This also applies if you have a medical condition or a compromised immune system.
People should also avoid social gatherings and of more than five people, as ordered by the Ontario government. Peel Public Health is urging residents to stay home for spring holidays and religious observances to help keep our communities safe.
