    Project 19-2410 – May 30, 2025 update

    Sanitary sewer relining and maintenance hole rehabilitation

    Construction update

    Peel Region will be rehabilitating the sanitary sewer and maintenance holes (commonly called manholes) along Eglinton Avenue West, as shown on the attached map. Sanitary sewers are underground pipes that carry wastewater from your home to a water resource recovery facility. Wastewater is created when water goes down a drain or toilet.

    We’ll clean the sewer pipe and place a new resin (plastic) lining inside it to extend its life. This work will be completed underground and will not require digging trenches in your neighbourhood.

    Rehabilitating maintenance holes ensures the sanitary sewers can continue to be accessed and maintained. Our work mostly involves repairing maintenance holes. When we need to partially replace one, we’ll share additional information with affected residents and businesses before the work starts.

    Construction schedule

    Construction is planned to start June 9, 2025 and finish in fall 2025. During this time:

    • We’ll reline the sanitary sewer in sections and spend approximately two to three days in each location.
    • It usually takes a few hours to three days to repair a single maintenance hole, depending on the work required. When the maintenance hole needs to be completely replaced, this work may take three to five days.

    All work is warrantied for two years from the completion date.

    Contractor working hours

    The work will be completed by Capital Sewer Services Inc. and supported by consultant AECOM Canada ULC., both under contract to Peel Region. Working hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. These hours are consistent with local municipal bylaws and help shorten the amount of time construction is in your neighbourhood.

    Under the City of Mississauga Noise Bylaw, work is allowed to take place overnight to reduce the impact of our work. It will take place on Eglinton Avenue West starting June 9, 2025 until construction completion.

    Traffic and parking

    We may need to temporarily reduce traffic to a single lane. If this is needed, we will place signs giving directions. On-street parking will be reduced when we are working on your street.

    It will be necessary to dig a temporary trench in the northbound lane of The Chase just north of Eglinton Avenue West, as shown in the map below. The southbound lane on The Chase will remain open during construction.

    It will not be possible to turn onto The Chase from Eglinton Avenue West.

    Northbound traffic on The Chase south of Eglinton Avenue West will be diverted at Eglinton Avenue West, as it will not be possible to drive straight through the intersection. These impacts will take place from June 30, 2025 until August 1, 2025.

    During this time, traffic will be directed by police officers or flag persons. The onsite contractor will guide emergency service vehicles and school buses through the closure.

    Waste collection

    If you receive Peel waste collection, your garbage, recycling, and organics will be picked up on your regularly scheduled day. It’s the contractor’s responsibility to move these bins from the end of your driveway to a location where waste collection vehicles can pick them up. Please make sure your house number is marked on each bin, so they are returned to the right address.

    Vibrations, noise, and dust

    You could feel slight vibrations and experience some minor noise and dust from construction work.

    Odours

    You may smell odours which will go away within a few hours. You can prevent or minimize this by pouring a bucket of water down the basement floor drain and running water in all sinks, showers, and tubs for a minute, either the evening before or day of the relining work. If this is not possible (for example, if it is currently covered by flooring), we strongly recommend making it accessible before construction begins to reduce odours.

    Construction safety

    Construction zones require extra caution to keep everyone safe. Be aware of your surroundings when driving, walking, or biking near the construction area. Watch for construction crews and other road users, slow down, and consider other routes. Visit peelregion.ca/workzonesafety for more information.

    Areas impacted

    Repairing a maintenance hole often requires digging a large hole around it. They are usually located within the municipal right-of-way. This includes the street and the municipal-owned land between the street and the water service box, a small, round, metal valve located outside on the property line between your home or business and the road. If maintenance holes are not within the right-of-way, Peel Region has obtained legal access through easements.

    This work may cause temporary damage to roads, curbs, sidewalks, boulevards, driveway aprons, and lawns within the municipal right-of-way or easement. Any damage caused by our construction will be repaired.

    In-ground sprinkler systems

    If you’re notified that your front lawn may be affected and you have an in-ground sprinkler system, we strongly recommend moving any sprinkler lines in the municipal right-of-way or within one meter of the maintenance hole. If you cannot move these sprinkler lines, send us your irrigation map or flag each sprinkler head within one meter of the sidewalk, curb, or driveway.

    Tree protection and trimming

    Trees in the municipal right-of-way will be protected using temporary fencing. Branches on public and private property will be pruned beforehand if they interfere with construction. The contractor will contact you before pruning any private property trees. If you do not allow the contractor on your property, the branches will be cut vertically at the property line.

    Driveway access

    We’ll knock on your door if we have to block your driveway for a short time. We will work to ensure businesses can be accessed. Contact us if you have any access needs.

    Repairing impacted areas

    Once we have finished maintenance hole and sanitary sewer work, we’ll repair the road, curb, sidewalk, driveways, and lawns.

    Repairs may be delayed due to seasonal weather conditions. For example:

    • Paving cannot take place when the ground is saturated with water, or the temperature is below 3°C.
    • Asphalt is not available in large volumes during the winter and usually becomes available in mid-May.
    • Most sod (grass) farms have sod available beginning in late May. We replace sod until the middle of November, weather permitting, to let the roots grow. If we do not replace it by the middle of November, we’ll replace it the following spring.

    Repairing grassy areas

    The contractor will replace any damaged sod on the boulevard or your front lawn and will take care of it for 30 days. You can help the sod stay healthy by watering it. A longer watering works better than watering more frequently for a shorter time. Early morning watering allows more water to soak in.

    Repairing driveways

    • Asphalt driveways: If we need to cut a section of your driveway, it will be repaired by paving a strip over the impacted area, resulting in minimal seams. Peel cannot replace your entire driveway.
    • Interlock or concrete driveways: If we damage a portion of your driveway, our contractor will repair the damaged portion.
