    Project 18-2300 C - June 14, 2023 update

    Sanitary sewer replacement and improvement

Streets affected: Fair Birch Drive and Birchview Drive, Mississauga

The Region of Peel has been working in your neighbourhood to replace the aging sanitary sewer just north of Fair Birch Drive, along the Lornewood creek water course. This work is required to maintain and improve existing wastewater services.

At this stage of the project, we have:

    • Installed the replacement sanitary sewer along Birchview Drive.
    • Dug tunnel access points at the following locations:
      • On Fair Birch Drive,
      • At the intersection of Birchview Drive and Fair Birch Drive. Refer to the map for the location of these tunnel access points.
    • Tunneled between these two access points.

Construction activities at the intersection of Birchview Drive and Fair Birch Drive

To reduce traffic impacts, we were able to temporarily reduce the size of the fenced area around the tunnel access point at the intersection of Birchview Drive and Fair Birch Drive. Now that the above tunnel has been completed, we will need to use this tunnel access point to remove the tunneling machine from underground. This will require returning the fenced area (around this tunnel access point) to its original size.

We will need to keep this larger area fenced off until November 2023 to complete the following activities:

    • Installing the sanitary sewer inside the new tunnel,
    • Testing the new sanitary sewer and putting it into service,
    • Connecting the new sewer to the Regional sanitary sewer system.

If there is an opportunity to temporarily reopen Birchview Drive during this time, we are committed to assessing this option and will notify you accordingly.

    Traffic impacts

To complete the installation of the new sanitary sewer, we will need to close Birchview Drive at Fair Birch Drive to all northbound and southbound traffic.

We expect this temporary road closure to begin as early as 9 a.m. on June 14th, 2023 and to be required until November 2023. If this changes and you would like to be notified of the exact date the road closure will begin, please sign up to receive email updates.

The road closure and detour route will be clearly marked with road signs. Please see the attached map for the detour route.

During this closure, Fair Birch Drive can be accessed by driving north on Birchview Drive, as shown on the drawing below. When leaving Fair Birch Drive, it is only be possible to turn left onto Birchview Drive.

These impacts may cause traffic delays. We ask for your patience and will try to minimize any delays as much as possible.

    Keeping you informed

Weather and other unpredictable events may change the date of these traffic impacts. Receive timely project updates right to your inbox by signing up for e-notices.

Information on this construction project can also be found on the project webpage.

    Safety during construction

Construction zones require extra caution to keep everyone safe – pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and construction workers. When driving, walking, or biking through the construction area, please be aware of your surroundings, watch for construction crews and other road users, slow down, account for delays, and consider other routes if possible. Learn more about how to stay safe in construction zones.

Thank you for your patience as we complete this necessary work. This work will allow us to continue providing you with high quality wastewater services. If you have any questions, please contact us.
