Improving diversity, equity and inclusion in EarlyON programs
Peel is one of Canada’s most diverse regions and it’s important that our early years and child care programs and services are equitable, inclusive, and reflect our community.
Over the past 2 years, we’ve been working to strengthen our diversity, equity and inclusion practices to make sure that all families can enjoy welcoming places that support their child’s growth and development.
We’ve learned that we can do more to better understand our community, identify and address gaps in representation, and create a feeling of belonging for all families in our programs.
The report, “Our intentional journey of growth” shares the key steps we’ve taken to better understand diversity, equity and inclusion and what we are doing to improve inclusion in Peel’s EarlyON system.
We’re committed to our journey and our next steps include supporting EarlyON providers as they continue to implement their action plans, providing professional development for all program staff and leadership, building a comprehensive evaluation network, supporting providers to build community relationships and better understand the unique needs of individual communities.
Our journey was led by Sharon Douglas and the S.M.D Consulting team. The lessons that we’ve learned in EarlyON will help us to develop a DEI strategy for our broader early years and child care system.
