Privacy breaches
A privacy breach involves improper or unauthorized collection, use, disclosure, retention or disposal of personal information.
Some of the most common privacy breaches happen when personal information is stolen, or mistakenly shared. It can also include the theft or loss of a device containing personal information.
How we handle breaches
As soon as the privacy team learns of a privacy breach, the following steps are taken:
- Identify the extent of the breach and takes steps to immediately contain it.
- Investigate the cause of the breach and work to eliminate the risk of it happening again.
- For significant breaches notify the individual(s) whose privacy was breached.
- Notify the Information and Privacy Commissioners Office of Ontario, if determined necessary.
If you would like to discuss a specific breach of information, contact privacy@peelregion.ca or call 905-791-7800 ext. 4384.
If we suspect or have confirmed that your information has been involved in a breach, we will contact you. We will work quickly to let you know what personal information was involved in the breach and what action we are taking about the incident.
