June is Seniors Month
It’s Seniors Month, and this year, we want to thank the seniors living in Peel who have worked hard their entire lives and made a difference not only in our community, but the communities they may have worked and lived in before coming to Peel.
Peel Region offers many services and support for seniors in our community, which includes operating 5 long term care centres and Adult Day Services.
Currently, 84% of people living in Peel’s Long Term Care Centres and over 80% of clients attending Peel’s Adult Day Services have a cognitive impairment diagnosis, including dementia.
To support the growing number of people living with dementia, our long term care centres balance the clinical and emotional needs of the people in our care. In our centres, as part of the Butterfly Model of Care, staff get to know our residents - not just who they are now, but who they were before diseases like dementia set in. This is a powerful approach used in providing care and services for our residents to help make them feel comfortable, understood, and meaningfully engaged. It‘s also rewarding for our staff, who get the opportunity to learn about our residents’ incredible stories and successes before they were with us.
Emotion-based care extends into Adult Day Services, and the other services we offer in the community. Our clients are people first and not defined by their ailments. We know the importance of a care model that works for the person and their family.
Many seniors prefer to stay in their homes for as long as possible, and we believe in creating a system that supports this. Working with our community partners, we’re committed to supporting seniors and helping them remain active members of our community. When that’s no longer desired or possible, we’re here to support them and their families as they transition into one of our long term care centres, ensuring the transition is as smooth as possible and the centre feels like their home.
Join us this month in celebrating the seniors we care for, our services, and the people who provide them.
