Affordable housing and homelessness support
The scale of this challenge goes far beyond what Peel Region alone can pay to meet the community’s housing needs.

Peel Region will continue to partner with the province to develop and deliver lasting housing solutions.
Actions we're taking
Affordable housing
To help close the gap, Peel Region has launched two key initiatives:
- The Peel Community Housing Development Program (PCHDP), delivering 1,444 new units across 12 projects.
- A Non-Profit Sector Capacity Building Program, aimed at strengthening long-term development and delivery capacity.

A lack of affordable housing is impacting individual and community well-being in Peel communities.
We continue to advocate to the federal and provincial governments for the following support:
- Investment in Peel’s PCHDP to support the building of more housing and shelter spaces.
- Provide $86.3 million annually for urgent repairs and to preserve aging housing infrastructure.
- Increasing the provincial cost-share of operating costs beyond 13% in order to support Peel Region housing investments.
- Expanding income and social supports to make it easier for homeowners and residents to carry high housing costs.
- Ensuring homes are lived in by reducing their use for speculative investment.
Homelessness
Homelessness in Peel continues to escalate, straining emergency shelter systems and increasing street homelessness.
- There has been a 93% increase in homelessness in Peel since 2021, with encampments up 111%.
- Permanent housing remains far more cost-effective than relying on shelters.
At current funding levels, Peel Region cannot provide enough of the critical supports needed to meet the growing demand. Without significant investment from the provincial and federal government, many individuals will remain unhoused or in precarious housing situations.
