Sewer overflow outfall location information
During heavy rainfall, the sanitary sewer system may overflow with diluted sewage to prevent properties from flooding before it reaches the GE Booth and Clarkson water resource recovery facilities.
An overflow may also occur due to failure of the wastewater collection system. Peel Region uses signs to mark the locations of designed system overflow outfalls in our wastewater collection system.
Health risks of sanitary sewer overflow
Diluted sewage discharged into a waterway can contain high levels of bacteria. This may pose health risks and cause diarrhea, skin rashes, ear pain, coughing, congestion, or eye irritation. Avoid contact with affected water during and for up to 48 hours after a sewer overflow event.
Fish caught in or near an affected area should be thoroughly cooked to an internal temperature of at least 70 C for 15 seconds before consumption.
Our responsibility
Peel Region is actively working to reduce emergency discharges into the natural environment. We are constantly seeking solutions and improving our system capacity, while also building an effective maintenance program to ensure the proper operation of our wastewater collection system.

Your responsibility
Understanding how water enters and leaves your home can help prevent damage to your property and the wastewater system. Make sure to check our tips on how to avoid clogged pipes.
You can also ensure the safety of your health and prevent injuries by being aware of the advisory signs, water quality testing and inspection results for lakes, beaches, pools, and other water facilities.
