Flooding due to rivers or streams
Riverine flooding happens when water from a river or other body of water exceeds its banks, flooding the surrounding area.
This is a natural process that happens when a stream or river can’t handle a high-water flow, and the excess water flows over into nearby low-lying areas.
Flood forecasting and warnings
Ontario Conservation Authorities issue flood messages as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program.
As part of this program, local Conservation Authority employees consistently monitor weather forecasts and watershed conditions and issue flood messages when conditions warrant an alert.
How to stay informed and prepared
Find your Conservation Authority
Peel Region works with 3 local Conservation Authorities: Conservation Halton (CH), Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA).
Refer to Find My CA to locate your local Conservation Authority and know the flood risks in your area.
Check if you live in a floodplain
Use TRCA’s floodplain map viewer to determine if your property is within a river flood-prone area.
