Conserving water indoors
Bathroom fixtures
Toilets and showers use over 40% of indoor water.
Replace older and inefficient models with WaterSense labelled high-quality fixtures. These high-performing, modern models use less water and help lower your water consumption.
When shopping in-store or online, look for the WaterSense label on fixtures such as toilets, showerheads, and faucets. For a full list of WaterSense products, refer to WaterSense product search.
Washing machines and dishwashers
Replace your old washing machine with an efficient model to maximize your water savings.
Look for information about the washing machine’s water factor (WF or IWF). WF is calculated based on the amount of water the washer uses per cubic foot. The smaller the water factor, the more efficient the model is.
A new dishwasher that uses less water per cycle will reduce your overall water use. Refer to Energy Star for a full list of efficient models.
Pipe maintenance and leaks
Maintain your pipes and fixtures regularly to prevent wasting water indoors.
Check for leaks in your home often and call a plumbing professional if you think a fixture or appliance is leaking. Even the smallest water leak can cause high water bills.
If you’re a tenant and there’s a water leak in your home or inefficient fixtures, contact your landlord.
Consider these easy ways to save water and money on your rental property.
When visiting your rental property, take some time to check water fixtures for leaks. Even the smallest water leak can cause high water bills. A leaky tap that drips once per second can waste more than 10,000 litres of water a year.
Lawn and garden watering can increase water use in the summer, but you and your tenants can still enjoy a healthy and beautiful yard without wasting water.
