Culvert and storm water maintenance
Removing garbage and digging out ditches helps water flow freely through storm water controls such as sewers, catch basins, ditches, and culverts. Keeping these controls clear means less flooding.
Roadway, roadside, and boulevard maintenance
Litter pick up and grass cutting
We always pick up litter before we cut any grass. Grass cutting on roadsides and boulevards happens every 3 weeks, 10 times a year in urban areas. Rural roadsides are cut twice a year.
Safety barriers and guardrails
Safety barriers and guardrails are designed to keep vehicles away from slopes or fixed objects such as hydro poles. All safety barriers need regular maintenance. Some might need to be repaired due to collisions.
Other roadside maintenance activities include:
- Tree trimming (when branches block traffic signs and signals).
- Fixing or replacing signs and signals, noise wall repairs, and shoulder levelling, which smooths out gravel shoulders in uneven areas.
- Street sweeping, filling in potholes, grinding out roadway ruts, and mending larger patches of pavement when winter ends.
- Yearly pavement markings re-tracing (the yellow and white lines that direct traffic on the roadways).
Crack sealing
Crack sealing is a treatment applied to the road surface to reduce the amount of cracks that happen as asphalt ages.
Yearly crack sealing helps the asphalt last longer by stopping water and debris from entering cracks. Crack sealing usually happens between May and August depending on the weather.
Pavement markings
Pavement markings provide guidance and information to drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists on the roadway.
Most Regional roads have high volumes of traffic. This makes pavement markings fade fast and become hard to see, sometimes even in just one year.
Peel Region has a yearly program for re-painting pavement markings.
Our contractor re-paints lines between May and November, from Sunday night to Friday morning, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
This means lanes or intersections may be temporarily blocked or closed (or both) for up to 2 hours to complete the work. Depending on weather and scheduling, our contractors to sometimes work on weekends as well.
If you are driving and approach a truck re-painting lines, stay well back or choose an alternate route to avoid driving over the fresh or wet paint.
