Peel supports meaningful action to reduce waste
BRAMPTON, ON (Apr. 30, 2026) – Peel Region’s Waste Management division is supporting local innovation through the Circular Economy Initiatives Fund (CEIF), which provides grants of $5,000 to $25,000 to not for profit organizations leading creative projects that reduce, reuse, and reclaim waste. The fund helps extend the life of materials, reduce landfill waste, and create lasting environmental and community benefits for Peel residents.
Community impact
In 2025, CEIF initiatives demonstrated how community‑led action delivers meaningful environmental and social benefits:
- Help a Girl Out helped reduce barriers to accessing reusable menstrual products by producing more than 1,600 reusable pads and engaging nearly 600 participants in reusable pad sewing workshops.
- Knights Table focused on diverting both appliance waste and food waste from landfill by repairing and redistributing 367 appliances to low-income households and establishing a daily food and organic waste tracking system prior to securing an on-site organic waste processor.
- Peel Career Assessment Services Inc. established a Tech Refurbishment Centre and Lending Library, providing 110 refurbished device loans to newcomers to assist in their school and career development, diverting 500 lbs of e-waste from landfill.
- Peel Multicultural Council improved access to transportation and active living while providing 187 refurbished bicycles to community members and supporting the repair of 152 additional bicycles through community workshops.
- Samaritan's Feet Canada focused on providing much needed footwear to vulnerable communities by collecting and redistributing 8,768 shoes, refurbishing the majority of shoes prior to redistribution to give them a new life and divert 20,673 lbs of shoes destined for landfill.
- The Dam inspired their youth participants to create their own circular economy project called "TerraFix," which engaged 263 attendees in activities such as clothing swaps and refurbishment workshops, and engaged over 3,000 people on social media with educational posts.
