Peel Region receives the CVC 2022 Green Cities Award

Body

Brampton, ON - (July 11, 2023) – Peel Region is a proud recipient of the 2022 Green Cities award from Credit Valley Conservation (CVC).

This award recognizes Peel Region for implementing leading-edge green infrastructure in both new development and existing urban areas. Infrastructure is the physical structure needed to operate a city such as stormwater pipes, roads or public buildings. Green infrastructure uses natural vegetation and green technologies to provide these services and offers additional environmental, health and social benefits to communities.

Since 1986, CVC's The CVC Friends of the Credit Conservation Awards have acknowledged the hard work and accomplishments of those who have made significant contributions to the health of Credit River Watershed.

The efforts being recognized by CVC are part of the Region's Climate Change Master Plan, which aims to increase green infrastructure and connectivity of natural areas across the Peel community. Some examples include:

  • Constructing and maintaining over 200 leading-edge stormwater treatment practices to prevent harmful pollutants in runoff from regional roads and properties
  • Mapping and assessing the condition of 14,105 individual trees and 3,666 tree and shrub clusters
  • Actively investigating how climate change hazards like extreme heat and more intense storms impact the Region’s infrastructure
  • Constructing a state-of-the-art snow storage facility which directs melting snow through several treatment devices before releasing it to the environment; and
  • Developing a unique Stormwater Servicing Master Plan to guide storm infrastructure for future growth, rehabilitation of the existing infrastructure and mitigate the impacts of climate change
