Peel Region Council approves Municipal Diversity Plan
BRAMPTON, ON (February 18, 2025) – The Municipal Diversity Plan, developed to ensure that municipal appointees to the Peel Police Service Board (PPSB) represent the diverse communities it serves, was approved by Peel Region Council on Feb. 13, 2025. Peel’s DEI@Peel strategy, endorsed by Council in October 2024, will be amended to include the Municipal Diversity Plan.
The Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019, that came into effect on April 1, 2024, requires Peel Region to prepare and adopt a Municipal Diversity Plan that ensures members of the PPSB are representative of the diversity of the areas it serves. Peel Region is one of the most diverse communities in Canada. According to the 2021 StatsCan data, Peel region is recognized as the most diverse municipality in the GTA, with 69 per cent of its population identifying as belonging to a racialized group.
The plan outlines new recommended competencies and skills for appointees to the PPSB. Recommendations to embed diversity, equity and inclusion into the process for selection of board members include:
- Establishing criteria regarding minimum knowledge, skill sets, and experience required of each individual member to ensure representation is reflective of the community it serves.
- Embedding diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion principles and practices into Peel Region’s Corporate Policy related to Community Member Appointments to Committees and Boards.
- Advocating to the Province to adopt Peel’s requirements when making provincial appointments to the PPSB. This includes a letter from Peel Regional Chair to the Province to advocate for the provincial appointment process to consider adopting the recommended knowledge and experience for all PPSB members.
