    Your PAD program

How to run a program in your organization.
    Image

Peel Regional Paramedic Services provides support to organizations in Peel who want:

    • To set up a PAD program.
    • To build on an existing PAD program.
    • Support after an AED has been used at their location.

    We can help:

    • Identify where to place your AED.
    • Determine how many AEDs you need.
    • Determine what type of AED would meet your needs.
    • Teach you how to use your AED in an emergency.

    Refer to the following resources:

    • The PAD/AED community guide has information for organizations who want to create their own PAD program or buy an AED.
    • The site assessment guide has information about AED site assessments and response plans.

Peel Regional Paramedic Services keeps track of private and public AEDs in Peel through an AED database. 911 call-takers use this database to let callers know where the closest AED is. If the caller can get an AED and use it before paramedics arrive, they can act to save a life.

Ontario law requires you to register your AED.

    Register your AED

In the 3 years before Bill 141 was passed, there were 600 cardiac arrests in Peel that took place within 250 metres of an AED. Those AEDs were not registered and, therefore, not used. No one knew a life-saving device was minutes away!

If your AED is already registered

Refer to the AED location map to find out if we already know about your AED. You can view this map any time on your mobile device using the PulsePoint AED registry app.

You can also add an AED you find in the community. Visit PulsePoint for more information.

Other benefits of registering your AED

    • You'll receive free replacement pads and other accessories after your AED is used in an emergency.
    • If you're hosting a large event or off-site gathering, you can borrow an AED from us for free.
    • If your AED cannot be serviced on site after it's been used, we'll loan you an AED for free.
    • You'll receive an information tag to attach to your AED. This tag details what to do after your AED has been used.
    • You'll feel good knowing you're helping save lives in your community.

    Regularly inspect your AED

As part of Bill 141, you must inspect your AED regularly. Your AED must be in a rescue-ready state.

If you have questions or want more information, this sample maintenance checklist may help. You can also email the PAD program.

Contact Peel Regional Paramedic Services after your AED has been used in an emergency. You can email the PAD program or call 905-791-7800 ext. 3103.

We will get your AED back in service and help with the following:

Provide support to anyone who performed CPR or used an AED

Peel Regional Paramedic Services offers a follow-up and debriefing session to lay-responders who give CPR or use an AED in public. The Lay-Responder Support program is the first of its kind in Canada.

    Download information from your AED

When you use an AED, it records patient information such as their heart rhythm. In some instances, the base hospital medical director or hospital needs this information.

If your organization uses an AED service provider, please ask them to give the AED information to Peel Regional Paramedic Services. All data is considered personal and private medical information. It is protected by the Personal Health Information Protection Act.
