In 2018, Peel Regional Paramedic Services joined a study with Sunnybrook Hospital. The 5-year study is underway to see if using drones to deliver AEDs (automated external defibrillators) to bystanders can save more cardiac arrest victims.
In Peel there are approximately 4 cardiac arrests each day.
The chance of someone surviving cardiac arrest drops by 10% for each minute that passes before defibrillation. This can be an issue in remote places where it can take longer for paramedics to arrive.
