Building Safer Communities Fund
In March 2022, Public Safety Canada announced their commitment to support municipalities with crime prevention and safety through the Building Safer Communities program, which aims to prevent youth gun and gang violence. In October 2023, Peel Region signed a 3-year, $7.3 million contract with Public Safety Canada with an end-date of March 2026. The funding was allocated as follows:
- $2.8 million for 2023-24
- $2.8 million for 2024-25
- $1.6 million for 2025-26
Funds are being used to:
- Bring local partners together to set an approach and build a youth violence prevention strategy for Peel.
- Fund community-based youth violence prevention and intervention strategies that enable integration and collaboration across system partners.

New funding opportunity
Through collaboration with community partners, racialized trauma, trauma-informed and violence-informed training for organizations serving vulnerable youth was identified as a need in Peel. Through the following expression of interest (EOI) we are seeking an organization to lead a racialized trauma, trauma-informed and violence-informed training project for providers serving vulnerable youth in Peel.
Expression of interest (EOI)
Eligible organizations can submit an EOI for funding to lead, plan, potentially procure, implement and support adoption and sustainability of racialized trauma, trauma-informed and violence-informed training for providers in Peel. Organizations are not required to deliver the training but can procure subject matter experts.
Project timeline
The project has an end date for March 31, 2026.
Project deliverables
Delivery of racialized trauma, trauma-informed and violence-informed training for front-line providers, management and leadership in the following sectors based on interest and readiness (in order of priority).
- Youth-serving community and social service organizations.
- Educational institutions (educators, teachers, principals).
- Youth-serving health service organizations (CHC).
- Legal aid or justice who interact or work with youth.
The organization that is successful in receiving the funding is not required to provide the training but can procure a subject matter experts to deliver the training.
- Toolkit of practical tools that training participants can implement into practice immediately following the training without additional staff or funding.
- Lead a "community of practice" and develop accountability to ensure sustainability of skills embedded in clinical practice and organizational culture.
- Project evaluation.
Funding amount
$270,000 - A portion of the funding will be used to fund human resources within your organization to manage project deliverables. The remaining funding will be used to fund achievement of project deliverables.
General eligibility
To be eligible to submit an EOI, organizations must:
- Be physically located in Peel Region or primarily serving Peel residents. If your organization is not located in Peel, at least a third of your clients must be Peel residents.
- Be incorporated as a registered charity or not-for-profit organization for the last 2 years.
- Be governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that is representative of the community it serves.
- Have established and documented financial management systems in place and be able to provide an annual audited financial statement or equivalent.
- Have an organizational revenue of at least $1,000,000.
