Watermain and sanitary sewer replacement and improvement

Street affected: Fletcher Drive

Peel Region has begun repairing driveways, roads, curbs, sidewalks, and sod (grass), following the replacement of the watermain on Fletcher Drive.

Restoration schedule

We plan to complete all restoration work by mid-December 2023, weather permitting. Restoration work will begin by fixing curbs and sidewalks. This will be followed by driveway and road paving repairs. Sod will then be replaced where grass has been damaged. This process will take approximately two weeks if weather conditions are favourable.

Please note that repairs may be delayed due to contractor availability or weather conditions.
For example:

Paving cannot take place when the ground is saturated with water, or the temperature is below 3°C.
Asphalt is not available in large volumes during the winter. Asphalt usually becomes available around mid-May.
Most sod farms are located north of Peel. They usually have sod available beginning in late May. We will replace the sod on your property once it is available.
In summer we may need to postpone sod replacement due to hot, dry weather. We will lay the sod once weather permits.
We replace sod only until the middle of November, weather permitting, to let the sod grow roots. If we do not repair your lawn by the middle of November, we’ll replace the sod the following spring.

Contractor and working hours

The work will be overseen by Nelli Construction under contract to Peel Region. This contractor’s normal working hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. These hours are consistent with the local municipality’s bylaws. We understand this may cause some inconvenience, but shorter working days would require your neighbourhood to be under construction for a longer period of time.

Traffic impacts

We may need to reduce traffic to a single lane during this work. If we must reroute traffic, we will place signs giving directions. On-street parking will be reduced when we are actively working on your street. If you need to park on the street, please park outside the active construction zone.

In-ground sprinkler systems

If the area in front of your home was affected by the construction work, in-ground sprinkler lines may be impacted during the upcoming repairs to sod, driveways, sidewalks and curbs. We strongly recommend moving any sprinkler lines that are located next to the sidewalk or driveway, or within the municipally owned right-of-way. The right-of-way is the land owned by the municipality between the street and your water service box (small, round metal valve in either your driveway or lawn).

If you can’t relocate these sprinkler lines, please:

Send us a map created by your irrigation contractor, or
Flag each sprinkler head that is located near the sidewalk, curb, and driveway (if you have not done so already).

This will allow us to minimize the impact to your sprinkler system.

Replacing and taking care of your sod

The contractor will replace any damaged sod (grass) on the boulevard or your front lawn, and will take care of the new sod for 30 days. You can help the sod stay healthy by watering it. A longer ‘deep root watering’ works better to establish new sod than watering more frequently for a shorter time. Watering in the early morning allows more water to soak in rather than evaporating.

Road repairs

We will repair the road where it was disturbed by our recent watermain construction. We expect these paving activities to be completed by mid-December 2023, weather permitting. We will provide a separate notice with more details on road paving closer to the date.

Temporary restoration

The City of Brampton is planning to complete roadwork on your street within the next few years. As this roadwork may impact the driveway, boulevard, street, curbs, and sidewalks, we will:

Pave only the areas of the street directly disturbed,
Fix damaged sidewalks and curbs using asphalt,
Patch your driveway to cover any places we disturbed, as the future roadwork may affect the bottom of your driveway. After the City of Brampton paves your street, the driveway will be repaired by paving a stripe over the disturbed area, resulting in minimal seams in the final driveway.

Peel Region’s repairs are temporary, as the City of Brampton will complete restoration as part of their roadwork. The City of Brampton will send you a separate notice about their construction.

Driveway access and parking

We may need to block your driveway for a short time during paving activities. Whenever possible, we will work to ensure businesses can be accessed.
Please avoid parking in your driveway when it is being repaired to provide maximum access to the construction crew. The construction crew will knock on your door before work on your driveway begins. If you will not be home weekdays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. during driveway paving, please do not leave any vehicles in the driveway.
Once the driveway is repaired, it is important to avoid driving on the new asphalt for the first three hours afterwards, and to avoid parking on the new asphalt for one day.

Warranty on construction repairs

Repair work completed as part of this watermain replacement project is under warranty for two years from the completion date.

It is normal for repaired areas to settle a bit in the coming months. If you notice dead grass or large potholes forming where the driveway, street, or lawn was repaired, please let us know and we will ensure the contractor fixes this before the end of the warranty period. Once the two-year warranty period is over, Peel Region is no longer responsible for fixing potholes or dead sod (grass) in these locations.

Safety during construction

Construction zones require extra caution to keep everyone safe – pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and construction workers. When driving, walking, or biking through the construction area, please be aware of your surroundings, watch for construction crews and other road users, slow down, account for delays, and consider other routes if possible.
