Project 18-2300 C - May 8, 2023 update
Streets affected: Fair Birch Drive and Birchview Drive, Mississauga
The Region of Peel has been working in your neighbourhood to replace the aging sanitary sewer just north of Fair Birch Drive, along the Lornewood creek water course. This work is required to maintain and improve existing wastewater services.
At this stage of the project, we have:
- Installed the replacement sanitary sewer along Birchview Drive,
- Dug tunnel access points at the following locations:
- On Fair Birch Drive,
- At the intersection of Birchview Drive and Fair Birch Drive.
See the map below for the location of these tunnel access points.
- Begun tunneling between these two access points.
Construction activities
Currently the contractor is working at the tunnel access point on Fair Birch Drive, where the tunneling machine has gone underground and is tunneling to the receiving access point at the intersection of Fair Birch Drive and Birchview Drive. This work is being performed with trenchless methods to reduce construction above ground.
Please see the map above to help explain this work. Please note that this map does not show the east portion of the tunnel and sewer that extends to the end of Fair Birch Drive.
Once the tunnel is completed, the contractor will install the sanitary sewer, test and commission the sanitary sewer, perform final sewer connections, and then restore the area.
Traffic impacts at Fair Birch Drive and Birchview Drive
Birchview Drive has been closed at Fair Birch Drive to all northbound and southbound traffic; however, as construction timelines allow, we will reopen Birchview Drive to all northbound and southbound through traffic. Work to open the intersection is expected to commence as early as May 16th, 2023 and will take a couple days to be completed. The opening will be indicated by road signs.
It will be necessary to close Birchview Drive to all northbound and southbound traffic again once specific construction work resumes at this site. This is expected to occur in June 2023 and will be indicated by road signs.
A separate notice will also be provided at this time. The closure is expected to be required until November 2023, however, the project team is working to minimize the amount of time this closure is required.
The drawing shows how traffic will be managed for the period of time that Birchview Drive is opened:
- Birchview Drive will be open to southbound and northbound traffic. Fair Birch Drive can be accessed by southbound and northbound traffic on Birchview Drive.
- When leaving Fair Birch Drive, it will only be possible to turn left onto Birchview Drive.
- Eastbound and westbound traffic will continue to share a single lane on Fair Birch Drive just east of Birchview Drive. Where a single lane is shared with oncoming traffic, please be sure to stop and yield to oncoming traffic. This lane reduction is expected to occur until November 2023.
Traffic Impacts on Fair Birch Drive
Fair Birch Drive has also been reduced to a single shared lane east of Mirada Place, as shown on the following drawing. Where a single lane is shared with oncoming traffic on Fair Birch Drive, please be sure to yield to oncoming traffic in accordance with the posted road signs. This lane reduction is expected to occur until November 2023.
These impacts may cause traffic delays. We ask for your patience and will try to minimize any delays as much as possible.

Safety during construction
Construction zones require extra caution to keep everyone safe – pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and construction workers. When driving, walking, or biking through the construction area, please be aware of your surroundings, watch for construction crews and other road users, slow down, account for delays, and consider other routes if possible. Learn more about how to stay safe in construction zones.
Thank you for your patience as we complete this necessary work. This work will allow us to continue providing you with high quality wastewater services. If you have any questions, please contact us.
