Vaccination clinics in school
Clinics are held 2 or 3 times during the school year. Appointments are not required.
Role of the school
Sharing school clinic information
Peel Public Health works with schools to determine vaccine clinic dates.
Schools are expected to support Peel Public Health by providing clinic information to parents and families through school communication channels in advance of the clinic date.
If families have questions that are better answered by Peel Public Health, you can send them to our school vaccine program page.
Collecting vaccine consent forms
Peel Public Health mails consent forms to families with grade 6 students at the end of each school year. Do not hand out consent forms to all Grade 7 and 8 students.
If parents have not already returned a consent form as their school’s clinic date approaches, schools are expected to encourage them to print and complete the vaccine consent form and return it to school before or on the day of clinic.
On the clinic day, students without consent will not be vaccinated. They may be provided with a paper consent form to return to school later in case there is a second clinic date scheduled. Keep any paper consent forms you have at the school until the next clinic.
If there is no second school clinic date scheduled, Peel Public Health nurses may give students without a signed consent form a tear off sheet with information to book a vaccine appointment at a Peel Public Health clinic.
Setting up for the day
Schools are expected to set up the clinic as requested before Peel Public Health arrives.
For the clinic, we recommend using the school’s library or the full gym if it is a larger school. We appreciate keeping it as quiet as possible.
Chairs for vaccination monitoring after vaccination are not required. Students may sit on mats on the floor. Always have 3 to 4 gym mats available, in case a student needs to lie down, and provide one to 2 large garbage bins.
On the clinic day, have the following printed and ready at the office for the clinic supervisor or charge nurse:
- Class lists for all Grades 7 and 8 students.
- The rotary schedule (if applicable).
- A list of students with special needs (if applicable).
Do not send these items by email.
Emergency procedures
Share emergency procedures with Peel Public Health before the school clinic date and on the day of the clinic. Schools should be ready to share procedures like hold and secure, lockdown, and fire emergency situations.
Role of Peel Public Health
Peel Public Health operates school vaccine clinics and nurses administer vaccines to students.
We distribute vaccine consent forms each school year to Grade 6 students to get consent ahead of the following year’s Grade 7 and Grade 8 vaccine clinics.
We also provide health information to schools and families who need it.
