Changes to Peel Region's role in land use planning
On July 1, 2024, under the Planning Act, Peel Region was designated an "upper-tier municipality without planning responsibilities."
Consequently, the Cities of Brampton and Mississauga and the Town of Caledon are the land use planning authorities responsible for local and regional official plans and development applications. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing is the approval authority for certain official plan reviews and amendments.
Supporting housing and growth monitoring, age-friendly built environments, and major office incentives
As a provider of essential infrastructure, services and programs, Peel Region monitors and analyzes housing, affordability, growth, and development data and trends to support evidence-based decision making and guide recommendations and updates to Peel Region Council.
The data collected helps coordinate, inform, and monitor various service, program and infrastructure plans, including Peel Region’s Capital Plans, the Water and Wastewater Master Plan, the Transportation Master Plan, and the Housing and Homelessness Plan.
Additionally, the data informs program and services planning throughout Peel Region.
Housing and growth monitoring
Monitoring growth and housing is essential to advancing Peel Region’s commitment to delivering services efficiently and effectively across the cities of Brampton and Mississauga and Town of Caledon.
By conducting regular monitoring of growth progress against forecasts, Peel Region services can accurately plan and be responsive to changing conditions and trends
In collaboration with provincial and local partners, Peel Region manages data to inform decisions on funding and delivering human and health services (e.g., housing and early years and child care) to help allocate resources to better meet current and future community needs and build more complete communities.
