Recognizing International Day of Persons with Disabilities

“Building Back Better” in a post COVID-19 world.

The theme for 2020 was “Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible, and sustainable post COVID-19 world”.

The United Nations declared December 3 as International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD).

COVID-19 has especially affected people living with disabilities.

Isolation, disconnect, disrupted routines, and reduced services have greatly impacted their lives and mental well-being.

Peel Region is supporting vulnerable citizens and those with accessibility needs through:

Collaboration with community stakeholders
Our Community Response Table (CRT) is helping local agencies respond to the COVID-19-related needs of vulnerable and at-risk citizens.
Temporary isolation and recovery sites
We’re helping to ensure proper isolation and care so citizens can isolate with suitable supports.
COVID-19 emergency funding
We’re providing additional funding to not-for-profit sectors in Peel impacted by COVID-19.
Peel Housing Corporation supports
We’re ensuring that Peel's non-profit housing provider keeps providing programs and supports to vulnerable tenants.
TransHelp
TransHelp is not only providing essential trips for clients, but also transporting Peel residents with a suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19.
PAMA Online
PAMA is providing virtual exhibitions and online activities to keep Peel’s communities engaged.

Check-in on those around you and reach out if you notice significant attitude or behavioural changes.
Accommodations
When providing accommodation, ensure that reasonable measures are in place to reduce contact while still allowing access to essential supports and services.

If you plan or create communication campaigns, use plain language with options in alternate formats.
