Peel Region's 2023 Continuous Improvement Program achieves significant cost savings
BRAMPTON, ON (November 16, 2023) - Peel Region remains committed to delivering services that are effective and efficient. The Region's Continuous Improvement Program (CIP) delivers improved service outcomes that provide value for tax dollars and contribute to advancing Peel’s Strategic Plan and vision of Community for Life.
In 2023, a total of 31 CIP initiatives were completed by Peel, with $939,000 in cost savings and $3.32 million in cost avoidance achieved. Cost savings from these initiatives also contributed to the achievement of Peel’s annual savings targets.
Some of the notable initiatives include:
- Reducing energy use on peak demand days at Water and Wastewater facilities and working in partnership with the Province to receive lower electricity fee rates, which resulted in a cost avoidance of $1.844 million above the $6.6 million in cost avoidance reported in 2022.
- Cost savings of $450,000 achieved by reprocessing organics “compost overs” and recovering woodchips for amendment materials.
- Cost savings of $210, 000 achieved in a pilot program that reduced contamination in the collection and processing of blue-box recycling.
- Cost avoidance of $74,000 from staff time saved by automating processes used by staff to conduct public health investigations.
These cost savings and cost avoidance are reflected in Peel Region's 2024 budget as part of the overall savings of $5.7 million achieved for 2024. In addition to financial benefits, improved client experience, employee engagement, and environmental benefits have also been achieved.

During this time of uncertainty due to Peel's Transition, we remain committed to continuous improvement. The 2023 results are a testament of this commitment, and I am proud of Peel staff who continue delivering quality services to residents while saving taxpayer dollars.
