New epaulette for Black History Month 2025
Selected from the call for artist and creative submissions, Peel Regional Paramedic Services congratulates one of our own Black Peel paramedics for their creative vision and commitment to honouring Black history by incorporating the traditional Kente Cloth pattern.
“When we think of Black history, often what comes to mind is the violence and oppression faced by our communities, past and present, due to factors such as racism, colonization, and imperialism – but Black history and the Black community is not so one-dimensional.
Instead, I decided to submit a design that I feel challenges the narrative of Black history being nothing more than a legacy of suffering and grief. For me, the Kente Cloth is the ultimate symbol of beauty, wealth, culture, and excellence in the Black community. It not only tells a different story of our past, but also makes space for Black joy, Black liberation, and Afrofuturism to become our legacy." – Artist
