National Work Zone Awareness Week – April 17 to 21, 2023

National Work Zone Awareness Week is an annual spring campaign. It’s held at the start of construction season to:

• Encourage safe driving through work zones.
• Remind drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians that work zone safety is everyone’s responsibility. 

As construction season begins, many road, water, and wastewater construction projects are getting underway across Peel. While it can be frustrating to travel through work zones, this construction is vital for building new infrastructure and maintaining Peel's roads, watermains and sewers.

Travelling through work zones require extra caution.

To help keep everyone safe:

• Be aware. Pay attention to the signage posted throughout work zones. These signs warn drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists that they’re approaching construction and will direct everyone safely through the work zone.
• Stay focused. Keep your eyes on the road and avoid all distractions such as cellphones and eating while driving.
• Slow down and keep your distance. Lane closures, reduced speeds, and traffic pattern shifts are common in work zones. Be alert and expect the unexpected.
• Protect workers. Slow down as you approach workers. Give them room to work and be prepared to stop.
