Celebrating a shared vision of an accessible Peel
Peel Region hosted a full day event in recognition of International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The 2019 event brought together Region of Peel staff and community agency partners to create a shared vision of an accessible Peel. The theme of the event — Inclusion by Design — highlighted the importance of incorporating inclusive design principles into our products, programs, and services.
The day included a panel discussion and 16 exhibitors who reflected the community services available to persons with disabilities.
Paralympian and World Champion Jeff Adams was the Keynote Speaker.
Jeff was joined by guest speakers Ricardo Wagner, Accessibility Lead for Microsoft Canada Inc., and Alfred Spencer from the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility.
Mr. Spencer facilitated an exercise where attendees brainstormed their vision for an accessible Peel and how that vision could be collectively achieved.
We asked attendees, “What does inclusive design mean to you?”
They told us:
“Working together to build inclusive communities that remove barriers and create access for everyone to participate.”
"Removing barriers; making the community accessible and welcoming to all ages, stages, and abilities."
We also asked, “How can we achieve this in our community?”
Attendees shared:
“By actively listening to people with disabilities and advocating for change.”
“By connecting with all stakeholders to design programs, services, workspaces and products that are inclusive of everyone, including going above legislated requirements.”
“By having awareness of our surrounding spaces and connecting with others to plan positive and inclusive outcomes.”
We’ll use this feedback to support the planning of Regional programs and services. Through these strengthened partnerships and collective efforts, we’ll continue to journey toward a more accessible Peel community that’s designed for people of all abilities.
The 140 attendees departed with a shared vision for an accessible Peel and ensuring that accessibility is at the forefront for defining we create our programs and services.
