Watermain and sanitary sewer replacement and improvement

Main Street and Queen Street Intersection Project 18-1380

Peel Region has been working in your neighbourhood to replace the watermains and sanitary sewers along Queen Street and Main Street. This work is required to maintain and improve existing water and wastewater services.

This work is taking place in stages, moving north from Main Street South through the intersection at Main Street and Queen Street, and then continuing north along Main Street North.

It will be necessary to temporarily close some major intersections to complete this work.

Traffic impacts during summer 2023

The intersection of Main Street and Queen Street will be closed to all traffic. This temporary road closure is expected to occur from 7 a.m. on Monday, August 14, 2023, until as late as 7 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2023. To minimize the duration of the road closure, this work will be continuous, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, on evenings with events taking place at Garden Square, there will be no construction. We will do everything possible to keep overnight noise to a minimum. Efforts will be made to reduce impacts to local residents by restricting the louder construction activities to the daytime.

A detour route will be clearly marked with road signs. Please see the included map for the detour route. Pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained. The intersection will be closed to all traffic and there will be no on-street parking within the construction zone. Emergency vehicles will have access to the area at all times.

Please expect delays and choose alternate routes.

While work is actively taking place, police officers may be posted around the closure area to monitor traffic flow.

We apologize for any delays or inconvenience resulting from these traffic impacts.

Traffic impacts during autumn 2023

A future intersection closure will also be required at Main Street North and Nelson Street West / Theatre Lane, tentatively scheduled for late autumn 2023. Further information will be provided closer to the date of this road closure.

Safety during construction

Construction zones require extra caution to keep everyone safe – pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and construction workers. When driving, walking, or biking through the construction area, please be aware of your surroundings, watch for construction crews and other road users, slow down, account for delays, and consider other routes if possible. To learn more about how to stay safe in construction zones, visit peelregion.ca/workzonesafety.

Thank you for your patience as we complete this necessary work. This work will allow us to continue providing you with high quality tap water and wastewater services. If you have any questions, please contact us.
