Peel Region celebrates opening of Birch Place

Brampton, ON (May 24, 2024) – Today, Peel Region is celebrating completion of Birch Place; a housing project in Brampton with 67 affordable rental housing units (50 affordable rental units and 17 transitional housing units for youth aged 16-24).

Originally a hotel, Birch Place was converted to affordable rental housing with $30.4M of funding through the federal government’s Rapid Housing Initiative. Construction began in April 2022 and completed in March 2024.

Conveniently located at 5 Rutherford South, Birch Place is in close proximity to grocery stores, restaurants, transit, medical clinics, banks, community services, and employment opportunities. The building’s features include: outdoor space for all tenants, barrier-free common spaces, improved accessibility, laundry rooms, and energy efficiency upgrades, and dedicated space with services and supports for youth transitional housing tenants.

Peel Region is experiencing a housing crisis with residents from all walks of life struggling with housing affordability or experiencing homelessness. As service manager, Peel Region's Housing Services team tackles the crisis by pursuing partnerships with all levels of government, non-profits, and community agencies, and implementing innovative solutions that optimize existing stock while aligning with community need.

Regional Council has invested significantly in Housing Development, working with developers, community agencies, all levels of government, and other partners to build new affordable housing and emergency shelters.

The federal government will always step up to support those in need of affordable and supportive housing from coast to coast to coast. The Birch Place project represents the accomplishments of so many people and organizations, from our federal government to our partners. Together we are moving toward a fairer society where everyone has a place to raise their family, achieve their dreams and most importantly, have a safe and affordable place to call home. Congratulations to everyone who worked hard for this project, I wish the new residents great success in their new homes.

Shafqat Ali, Member of Parliament for Brampton Centre

The opening of Birch Place is a cause for celebration. Not only will this building provide affordable housing to residents and youth in need, but it will also build deeper community connections. This would not be possible without the generous funding contributions of the federal government and Peel’s commitment to helping all residents get and keep housing.

Nando Iannicca, Region of Peel Chair

Far too many residents are struggling with affordable housing. In order to tackle the crisis, we need to pursue innovative solutions and work collaboratively with our government partners and community. Birch Place represents what can happen when we come together to not only build affordable housing, but ensure that residents are set up for success, can access essential supports and are fully integrated into their communities. I'm proud to represent the City of Brampton where projects like Birch Place are possible.
