Project 14-4065 July 2024 update

Peel Region thanks the Belfountain community for their feedback regarding the clock feature and the Belfountain Rehabilitation Project.

Here is a summary of the results.

There were 117 votes – 63% are opposed to the clock feature, 37% are in favour. Therefore, we will not implement the clock feature as part of the project.

The community has requested that the Region work with the Belfountain Heritage Society to have a local artist create a unique feature that represents Belfountain. We are in discussions with the Belfountain Community Organization (BCO) and Belfountain Heritage Society regarding this feature.

BCO held their Annual General Meeting on June 26, 2024. These are community comments about the Belfountain project, along with Peel’s responses:

  1. Comment: The community expressed concern with perceived expansion of wider asphalt surface through the hamlet. Extending asphalt to limit of right-of-way for driveway "aprons" that are not currently paved is of concern. "Paving paradise" in a heritage hamlet is how they view this project element.

    Response: Peel will reduce the driveway apron paving to 3m from edge of shoulder or up to property line, whichever is less. For example, if the property line is 7m from the edge of paved shoulder, we will only pave 3m. This is the minimum to prevent the gravel wash-out onto the paved shoulder. Paving the gravel shoulder is a requirement on all our projects to allow for active transportation and use for pedestrians – as such we cannot forego this requirement.
  1. Comment: People are also concerned with increased vehicle speed as a result of wider road appearance.

    Response:  As part of the capital project, the Region will reduce lane widths to 3.30m (as opposed to the typical 3.5m-3.75m). Narrowing lane widths has shown to be effective in slowing down motorists. The paved shoulder and travel lanes are delineated by line markings.
  1. Comment: Lots of questions about road side parking and where it would be allowed or prohibited.

    Response: Peel Region’s Traffic Engineering team has previously completed a detailed parking study in the Belfountain area. The details of the parking study and outcome can be found on that project’s webpage.

    The recommended parking changes outlined in this review will be implemented as part of the Belfountain project.
  1. Comment: Concept of community monument through Belfountain Heritage Society was well received.

    Response: Peel is working with the Belfountain Heritage Society to review feasibility and implementation of the monument.
